There appears to be a widespread misconception among health care professionals, including gynecologists that goes something like this: “Honey, just get pregnant, deliver your baby, and your vaginismus will disappear”. Wrong!
I have heard this so many times. It does not appear to work that way. Yes, women can get pregnant by external splash and some have used the syringe method, while others got pregnant with a single event of intercourse, sometimes inebriated sometimes not. Most of these patients have required a C-section and those who were able to deliver vaginally had no benefit overcoming their vaginismus.
The spasm of the entry muscle, the bulbocavernosum is not affected by pregnancy and will continue to be in a state of overactivity or spasm after the delivery.
For those patients who have been treated with the Botox program, or just dilation, vaginal delivery has been uniformly successful.
It is suggested that patients avoid pregnancy for about four months after treatment with Botox. This is a routine precaution in that it is best to avoid drugs and medication during pregnancy. Even though thousands of women have had uneventful pregnancies after Botox, and there is no association of Botox to congenital anomalies, it is still best to stay with caution. If treatment is with dilation only, pregnancy can be achieved anytime after treatment.
