Previous Penetration is like “Hitting a Wall” – Waking Up with a Dilator “Flips a Switch!”
For most of my treated vaginismus patients, waking up from anesthesia with a large dilator in place is monumental. A lot of my patients are under the false impression that their anatomy was not formed correctly and that is why any form of penetration feels like they are “hitting a wall”. Therefore, waking up in the recovery room with the dilator in place actually “flips a switch” in their brain when they realize that they can dilate successfully. Once they realize that they can dilate, it then becomes very important for the vaginismus patient to continue to dilate every day, even after they achieve intercourse.
Practice, Practice and more Practice
For the next two days while the vaginismus patient is still at our surgicenter, they continue to “practice” dilation with supervision using the Pure Romance Dilators. We like the Pure Romance Dilators because they are soft, smooth, flexible and come in six graduated tapered sizes. They are 100% silicone and are used to slowly stretch the vaginal walls, making penetration and routine medical exams comfortable. During this time, our patients gain the confidence in being able to dilate. When they leave our surgicenter to go home, they are usually ecstatic about the progress they have made in the area of dilation.
Importance of Keeping a Daily Log of the Dilation Schedule
When a patient returns home, they are asked to keep a daily log of their dilation schedules and to enter the most recent day at the top of the word document. The common theme is that patients start slowly, with the smaller dilators, and work up to being comfortable with the larger dilators. The important aspect is to take responsibility for one’s own dilation schedule. When our patients are diligent with their dilation and their log, the successes are amazing! We have heard from our patients time and time again that the dilator is their best friend! When patients use their dilators religiously and stay in contact with our office, there is a very high rate of success in achieving pain-free intercourse.
